Review: Baker Days Valentine Cake

Jess McGlynnFebruary 4, 2013

I love cake, that is absolutely no secret and so I was over the moon when Baker Days asked if I would be interested in reviewing one of their new ‘letterbox cakes’…how could I say no? It’s a cake, and it fits through your letterbox…ingenious!

The difficult point came when I realised it was one of their lovely Valentines cakes they wanted me to review…which meant I’d have to give it to my OH!

The ‘letterbox cake’ is a brand new product from Baker Days.  It is designed to be posted through your letterbox and to drop safely onto the doormat of family, friends, your own etc without any damage being done to the cake.

They don’t just make Valentine cakes either, there are over 400 designs on their website and five different cake types to choose from.  You can personalise your cake with a message or upload a photo and birthday cakes come with candles, a balloon and a party horn.

At first I was dubious about how the cake would taste, surely it would have to be a heavy duty sponge in order to survive the drop from letterbox to doormat?  But actually, it comes packaged in a very lovely little tin which not only keeps it fresh but also protects it.

Unfortunately I will have to trust that the tin protects it as my postman didn’t actually post mine through the letterbox and I did have to go and collect it from the Royal Mail depot.  I did wonder whether the postman thought it wouldn’t fit…perhaps it would be an idea to have “you can post me” or some such message on the external box?

To be honest it didn’t bother me personally but I know it kind of defeats the point of it being a letterbox cake!

There was also a lovely little packet of love hearts in the box and a gift card which I thought was a really nice touch.

And the cake itself…well it was very cute and very delicious (yes I did insist that OH share it with me…for official cake tasting purposes you understand), the sponge was lovely and light and the icing was just the right amount.  It’s a thumbs up from me!

Prices start at £14.99 for these cakes including delivery and I think that’s very reasonable considering what you get.  These would make a really love gift if you aren’t able to see loved ones on special occasions.
