If you follow me anywhere on social media you will have no doubt seen me celebrating the arrival of autumn. Don’t get me wrong; I could do without the grey, drizzly mornings and the fact that it is dark when I wake up but I love the excuse to pull out my tartan scarves, warm jumpers and boots.
When I was recently asked by Simply Be to write a post about autumn fashion, how could I say no? I love everything about autumn fashion from the rich, deep colours to the thick fabrics and the opportunity to layer up and achieve that cosy look.
But before you go out shopping, there are some ways that you can get ready for your autumn wardrobe:-
1. Have a clear out
This is something which I have only started implementing in recent years but as I put away my summer clothing I have a real, honest sort out. This means getting rid of any items which I haven’t worn in the last season (as it means I am unlikely to the following year). I also sort through any existing autumn/winter items, deciding what I want to keep hold of and what might need replacing. This gives you a good base to build with if there are any new items you’ve got your eye on as well.
2. Do some research
Once you have a good idea of the items you already have in your wardrobe you can start to look at items you might want to buy. Spend some time online looking at current trends and what is being sold in your favourite stores. If you don’t have a big budget to play with then try and find some key pieces which will complement what you already have in your wardrobe.
3. Go neutral
This kind of goes against what I said above, as I love the deeper colours of autumn fashion (anyone else love this foxy tunic from Simply Be?) but it’s always best to have a decent collection of neutral or monochrome items which can then be the base for richer colours such as burgundy, navy and red. It gives you limitless options of mixing and matching outfits too.
4. Quality pieces
It can be so tempting to simply load up on cheap on-trend items but the perfect wardrobe should have an equal balance of good quality key pieces alongside affordable on-trend pieces. Your quality key items of clothing will last you season after season and you don’t need to worry about an item going out of fashion before you’ve had your money’s worth. Some core items which no autumn wardrobe should be without include a fitted blazer, skinny jeans, and a couple of sweaters; although it’s also important to stick to your own style. If you don’t wear skinny jeans then there is no point buying any. Why not opt for a long sleeve dress instead?
5. Stick to what you love
Every now and then I get the impulse to just throw off the types of outfits I currently wear and try something completely different. Sometimes this can work wonders but more often than not I buy something because I think I should be wearing it and not because I want to wear it. When you finally have an idea of what you want and need and go shopping, make sure you only buy items that you love. There’s no point buying a dress which is only going to get worn for a few hours and then spend the rest of its life at the back of your wardrobe.
