You Know You’re A Homeowner When…

Owning our own home was something we had wanted as a family for the longest time.  Although renting can mean less pressure when things go wrong, it can also be quite limiting.  Some landlords won’t allow redecoration or even pictures to be hung on the walls, so it can be tricky to make a space which feels truly like your own.  We rented for almost a decade so were fully ready to move into a house which was ours.

We were finally able to purchase our own home just over a year ago and have begun to discover the fun that is being homeowners.  We bought a renovation project and although we didn’t go into the process with our eyes closed, things have not been plain sailing by any stretch of the imagination.  From our discovery a few weeks after we moved in that the whole house needed to be re-wired to the recent mousegate (5 mice and counting…) there have been a number of occasions throughout the past 12 months when I have wished hard that we could just pick up the phone, speak to the landlord and make the issues someone else’s problem!

In spite of these bumps in the road, today I wanted to do a slightly more lighthearted post about some of the moments when it truly begins to sink in that you own your own home…

1. You wonder just what you’ve gotten into…

I’ve spoken to a lot of people over the last 12 months who have all told me that at one point or another they have experienced buyer’s remorse.  This is not a sign that you have made a gigantic mistake but rather that you have made a big decision.  It is natural to wonder if perhaps you should have just looked at a few more houses before committing, or to start to wonder whether the house will ever feel like the home you saw the potential for when you viewed.  Panic not! Just know that you are now officially a real homeowner.

2. You argue about the most random things…

If you don’t find yourself standing in IKEA arguing with your partner (or even yourself!) about whether you want neat fit pleated blinds or wooden shutters, whether you really need that pack of napkins or simply what colour scheme you want your bedroom to be…are you even really homeowners?!

3. Your evenings and weekends are no longer your own…

This is especially true, if like us, you have bought a house which needs redecoration or renovation.  Our evenings and weekends are now often spent discussing the next thing we need to do, wandering around DIY and homeware stores or actually putting our plans into action.  With both myself and James working the majority of the week, these are the only times we can carry out house tasks.  It’s not always fun but we try to keep the dream in mind.

4. Youtube is your best friend…

We made the decision that we wanted to try and do most of the renovation work ourselves but having never really got involved in DIY projects before we have found ourselves spending countless hours staring at Youtube videos trying to mimic how easy people make DIY look.  So far, this has not been the case for us but we live in hope!

5. Your standards change…

Before actually owning our home, I was very particular about what I would and wouldn’t accept; cutting corners was a big no-no for me.  But increasingly I have found myself willing to go along with things simply because there are so many jobs and sometimes things just need to be done.  I recently painted the awful red feature wall in our room, as I couldn’t stand it any longer.  Our room is way down the list of rooms to be done, and since its new paint job is probably even further down now.  I did an alright job but it was a rushed and last minute decision but you know what…I’m just happy I don’t have to stare at a bright red wall as I’m trying to sleep now! Trust me when I tell you that even as little as 6 months ago I would not have said the same thing!

Have you got anything that you would add to this list?
