Should You Repair or Replace that Appliance?

*THIS IS A COLLABORATIVE POST*

It can be challenging to know if you should be repairing or replacing your old appliances. It can be bothersome when they stop working or aren’t working as intended.

Big home appliances can be expensive, and the idea of replacing them can send many people running for the hills. But if you invest in high-end replacement parts for your appliances, it will give them a new lease of life – and you might be surprised just how long they last after that.

Cost

If your appliance is already pretty old, location parts can be pretty expensive. If your repair is going to cost more than 50% of the cost of a new appliance, that is a good indicator it is probably better value to consider buying new.

It isn’t just the part itself that you need to consider; once you have purchased the part, you’ll pay shipping, and you may also need to cover the cost of labor to have it fitted too.

Age

If the appliance is fairly new, you might be within the warranty period – in which case you should see what your options are. Often it is easier for them to send a replacement than repair the appliance.

If you are just outside of your warranty and the part is easy to find and replace, that can be the best option.

However, if the appliance is more than ten years old, it could be the right time to consider a replacement.

Older appliances, while they might be a bit of a workhorse – they aren’t always energy efficient.

Here are a couple of ages to keep in mind; for the age range, you should replace certain items:

  • Dryer 13 years
  • Dishwasher 9 years
  • Microwave 9 year
  • Refridgerator 13 years

Of course, you might get more years out of your appliance if you have been careful about maintenance and it hasn’t been used to extremes.

Energy efficiency

The cost of running the appliance should be one of the factors that help you to decide if you should repair or replace it. Older units are unlikely to offer you the energy efficiency that you need.

Energy-efficient appliances save you money in the long run, so that should be a strong indicator that it is time for you to update your current appliance.

Maintenance

A very important question to consider when you are thinking about repair or replacement – is that if you had better maintained the item, would you currently be in this predicament?

If you do decide that you want to replace your current appliance, then it is vital that you make sure you keep to the maintenance schedule.

Most appliances come with a set of instructions to make sure you get the most from using them, and that will include a detailed guide about the care it requires. Often simply keeping them clean can do much of the work.
